Rhinoplasty Recovery: Week-by-Week Guide for International Patients
Recovering from rhinoplasty is a process that unfolds over months โ though most of the visible healing happens in the first few weeks. If you are planning a nose job in Istanbul as an international patient, understanding the recovery timeline will help you plan your trip effectively and set realistic expectations for your results.
Immediately After Surgery
You will wake from anaesthesia with a splint on your nose and some packing inside the nostrils if the surgeon worked on the septum. You will be in the recovery room for 1โ2 hours before being moved to your room.
Expect congestion (you will breathe through your mouth), mild to moderate discomfort manageable with prescribed pain medication, and some swelling around the eyes and nose. This is entirely normal.
Days 1โ3
This is the most uncomfortable phase. Swelling and bruising around the eyes peak at 48โ72 hours. You may look worse before you look better โ this is expected and temporary.
Sleep with your head elevated (two pillows) to reduce swelling. Apply cold compresses around (not on) the nose to reduce eye bruising. Take all prescribed medications on schedule. Eat soft foods and stay well-hydrated. Avoid blowing your nose.
Days 4โ7: Splint Removal
The splint is typically removed at day 5โ7. This is an important milestone โ and one reason we recommend international patients stay in Istanbul for at least 7โ10 days. The splint removal appointment allows the surgeon to assess healing and clear any crusting from the nostrils.
After splint removal, your nose will look swollen and the shape may not be what you expected. This is completely normal. The nose at this stage does not represent your final result โ it is simply an intermediate stage of healing.
Weeks 2โ4
Most patients return to non-strenuous work or daily activities at 10โ14 days. Visible bruising fades significantly. Swelling reduces progressively. You will start to see a hint of your new nose shape emerging.
Avoid strenuous exercise, wearing glasses directly on the bridge, direct sun exposure on the nose (use SPF50+), and blowing your nose forcefully.
Months 2โ6
At 4โ6 weeks, most swelling has resolved. The nose looks much closer to its final shape. Subtle firmness (normal scar tissue formation) continues to soften. You can return to exercise gradually from week 4โ6.
The Tip (Months 6โ12)
The nasal tip is the last area to fully heal because it has the densest tissue and poorest blood supply. Final rhinoplasty results are assessed at 12 months.
Planning Your Stay in Istanbul
We recommend international rhinoplasty patients plan for a minimum 8โ10 day stay in Istanbul. This covers surgery day, 5โ7 days of recovery, the splint removal appointment, and a final post-operative check before departure. After returning home, follow-up is conducted via video call.
